Netflix's Engagement Report 1st Half 2024: Kdrama Edition

It's here! Netflix's Engagement Report for the first half of 2024 was released today! Netflix starting releasing details the hours viewed as well as views per show last year. Until then, the only information we could glean from hours watched was placement on Netflix's Top 10 charts. This engagement report gives us information on all the shows rather than just the ones that make the Top 10, and all the hours vs. just the hours on the charts.

There's two important variables when considering this information:

  • Hours watched. These are the actual hours watched.
  • Views. These are calculated by taking the hours watched/number of hours during its runtime. This gives a rough idea of how many times viewers watched a show to completion.
Depending on which one you use, your results will vary a bit.

  • Hours watched gives you just that: the total numbers of hours viewers spent watching this show. Whether someone doesn't complete a particular show isn't filtered out. If a show ends up with a lot of drops, one can't tell from this data. It also gives preferences to shows with more episodes. Naturally shows with more episodes can generate more hours watched, which could give you a false idea of a show's success.
  • Views attempts to level the playing field by creating a number that represents how many times viewers watched a show in its entirety. This technique works well for longer reports such as this, as most of the shows are completed. For currently airing shows, Netflix marked the runtime with an asterisk and provided the views manually. Regardless, since these shows showed up at the end of the reporting period, their hours watched and views are minimal, so the shows themselves are not a factor.
Okay, enough chit chat. Let's see how our favorite kdramas performed in the first half of 2024, first sorted by hours:

If you know your kdramas, you can see interesting patterns how various shows perform based on data you are already aware of. I may do some more blog posts on it, but I was excited to get this information out to all of you first, Tomorrow is another day!
